Pelican Seals Plastic Containers with RFID Seals

November 14, 2022

Pelican Products is a manufacturer that sells plastic containers. The containers currently sold are mainly sealed with RFID Seals. The previously purchased containers use RFID conversion tools, which enhances the product's insurance factor for customers. The factory has a wide range of customers, including government agencies, large manufacturers, fire police departments, professionals and industrial workers. The plastic containers produced are rectangular in shape and can be reused and varied in size. Large ones are like military suitcases, and small ones are like iPods.
The RFID seal used by Pelican is called SecureContainer and is provided by Mikoh. It can be used by users to seal the container using RFID technology, and at the same time to follow the process of opening the seal. Pelican agrees that Mikoh can also sell such containers.
Plastic boxes made by Pelican In February, Mikoh began selling containers using SecureContainer seals, and Pelican sold 56.
The SecureContainer seal secures the wear-resistant RFID seal to the container mouth. In this way, Pelican can prove to the customer that the container has not been damaged. Although Mikoh will provide a long list of integrators and RFID reader vendor names, RFID queriers are still purchased separately.
The specific labeling process is as follows: The user slides the disposable plastic liner on the mouth of the container, and then attaches a Mikoh Smart&Secure passive or active label on the liner. According to Andrew Strauch, Mikoh's vice president of product marketing management, these RFID tags sold by Mikoh can be applied to different standards and different frequency bands, including LF, HF and UHF. The sealant on the RFID tag will directly enter the plastic liner and will not touch the container, so that after using the label, no sealant will remain on the container mouth. If you want to open the container, you must break the plastic liner and the RFID tag on it.
Mikoh's RFID Electronic Seals SecureContainer seals mainly take two modes of operation. One is that if someone wants to remove the tag or open the container, the wire between the antenna and the chip installed in the RFID tag will break. At this point, the RFID chip cannot be used. This kind of scheme has low cost. If the user finds that the label cannot be read, the label has been destroyed.
The second way is that even if the seal is broken, the tag can still be read, but when it is read, it will send a message warning the seal is broken. This scheme, Strauch said, has attracted the interest of U.S. government officials because even if the seal is broken, government officials can still get historical data on the label.
Pelican intends to sell containers and remodeling tools that use SecureContainer seals to users who have already purchased Pelican containers and want to apply RFID technology.
Mark Rolfes, vice president of marketing at Pelican, introduced that Mikoh first found Pelican after cooperating with the same government agency. This government agency has been looking for secure containers using RFID technology. The container used by the agency has to cross many parts of the world and transit several times during this period. When it arrives at the destination, if it is found that the goods are missing, it seems impossible to find the cause of the damage of the seal.
However, if an RFID seal is used, even if it is broken, the agency staff can read the data on the label and find the cause of the damage. The breakage of the label must have occurred between the previous reading and the damage.
The conversion kit is around $50, while the replacement for RFID tags and plastic liners is about $8. The first batch of RFID kits will be delivered to an unknown government agency in the next few weeks. RFID-enabled containers and retrofit kits for individual users are currently in production.
